Folk calendar
Zlatoust
On this day, the church celebrates the feast of John Chrysostom, the Archbishop of Constantinople, who lived in the 4th and 5th centuries and is revered as one of the three Ecumenical saints and teachers (along with Saints Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian).
In the old days in Rus' they said: “Winter summons its retinue to St. John Chrysostom – blizzards and blizzards – and gives them the order to calm the thaw.” The frosts became more and more intense, all living things froze, the plants fell asleep, the animals hid in holes. “On Chrysostom the whole field is empty,” people remarked.
The so-called “dumpling time” began with John. Housewives made minced meat (meat, fish, and mushrooms were used as filling), and the whole family cooked their favorite dish. They tried to stick more dumplings – for several dinners at once. They were frozen right in the yard, and later they simply measured out the required amount and cooked it.
Also on this day, it was customary to pray to John Chrysostom for a fair trial of bribe-takers and deceivers.
