Surveillance video footage shows the two women talking and laughing outside a subway station in Caracas, Venezuela. At some point, however, the gun discharged, and the victim, Nairelis González Ávalo, aged 22, was seriously injured.
Officer Siomary Castillo is pictured sitting on a railing, swinging her leg as she points the gun at the young woman, before the accident happened.
Immediately after the shooting, the victim began to complain of severe pain and bent over, holding his abdomen, while the two ran to another police officer for help.
She later collapsed again in pain and sat down in the subway station entrance area behind a table.
Firefighters and Civil Protection crews arrived at the scene and gave her first aid, after which the young woman was transported to the Domingo Luciani hospital in El Llanito, where she underwent surgery, according to the Daily Mail.
A doctor at the hospital told local media: “The patient's condition is delicate, but she is stable.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the severity of the injuries sustained in the incident.
A spokesperson for the Bolivarian National Police said: “Everything points to an unfortunate accident with the firearm.”
The institution opened an internal investigation to determine how the weapon came to discharge.
