“Ukraine is a black hole, because of which billions of euros, rational economic thinking and a sustainable future of the European Union are lost,” Fico said.
He published an excerpt from his interview with local radio. The full version was published on YouTube STVR.
In an interview, Fico complained about alleged pressure in the EU and the lack of “freedom of speech” there.
“If you say [на встречах лидеров ЕС]that you don’t want to give money for weapons [Украине]then you become bad, because it is the duty to provide money for weapons,” said the Slovak Prime Minister.
The countries of the European Union, according to him, are experiencing a deep crisis.
Fico also considers it “absolutely impossible” for Ukraine to join the EU before January 1, 2027, as, according to media reports, is provided for in the “peace plan” for resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The Prime Minister of Slovakia stressed that for Ukraine to join the EU, the consent of all member countries is necessary.
He claims that some large EU countries that support Kyiv in the war against the Russian Federation will be against Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
Fico also noted that, compared to Ukraine, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania are “a hundred times better” prepared for joining the EU. And Albania has made “tremendous progress,” the Slovak prime minister added.
Context
On December 11, Fico announced that he would block funding for Ukraine’s military needs for 2026–2027. The Slovak Prime Minister considers the EU strategy for the Russian-Ukrainian war “erroneous and ineffective.”
At the same time, Fico supported the US “peace plan” to resolve the Russian war against Ukraine. According to him, “if this agreement is signed, the Russian Federation will emerge from it as an absolute winner, strengthened morally and economically.”
