The fund confirmed this information in its latest announcement. Minister of Finance Andrzej Domański also spoke on this matter.
Mateusz Szczurek will take up the position of director of the European Department, where he will be responsible for the relations of the International Monetary Fund with 46 member countries of the European Union and the euro zone.
His main tasks will include strategic advice in the area of maintaining macroeconomic, financial and external stability, as well as stimulating sustainable economic development. In addition His key responsibilities will include supervision of the IMF aid program dedicated to Ukraine.
Szczurek will replace the retiring German Alfred Kammer, who has held this position since 2020.
Andrzej Domański: another confirmation of Poland's position
The current Minister of Finance, Andrzej Domański, commented on the information about Szczurek's promotion in his latest entry on the X platform.
“Another Pole in a key position in international institutions! Mateusz Szczurek will take one of the most important positions in the International Monetary Fund, where he will be responsible for the entire Europe. This is another confirmation of Poland's strong and growing position. Mateusz, good luck!“- he wrote.

He was not only in Donald Tusk's government. Who is Mateusz Szczurek?
Mateusz Szczurek is a Polish economist. He obtained his education, among others: at the University of Sussex and at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Warsaw, from which he graduated in 1998 with a master's degree. Seven years later, in 2005, he defended his doctorate at a British university.
He associated his professional career with the banking sector. In 1997, he joined the ING team as an economist, and in 2011 he was promoted to the position of chief economist of this group for Central and Eastern Europe. He was also socially involved: he co-founded the Association of Graduates of British Universities (which he chaired in 2003-2005) and joined the Society of Polish Economists.

At the end of 2013, he entered the world of politics. In November, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced his candidacy for Minister of Finance, and he received the official nomination from President Bronisław Komorowski. He also maintained this position in the next cabinet, led by Ewa Kopacz, ending his government mission in November 2015 after the government of the Civic Platform and PSL lost the parliamentary elections.
In the following years, he continued his career in international financial institutions. In 2016, he joined the European Fiscal Council and started working in the Warsaw branch of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In turn, in 2024, he was appointed to the management board of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego.
