The president of Mexico accuses the interference of the radical right in the US. “Who decides, foreign agencies or the people?”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that segments of the radical right in the United States are coordinating with domestic groups to attack her government, a statement that represents an escalation of her rhetoric against her country's most important trading partner, Reuters reports.

The statements were made after a rally where Sheinbaum denounced the interference of US government agencies and business interests.

“I think there are sectors of the radical right in the United States that want a bad relationship with Mexico” because of “ideological” differences, Shainbaum told a news conference. The leftist president said she does not believe these attacks are being coordinated by her American counterpart, Donald Trump.

Relations between the two states have been strained since Trump began his second term in January 2025 over disputes over tariffs and immigration policies.

Tensions escalated in April after the US Justice Department indicted 10 Mexican officials, including Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha of the ruling Morena party, over alleged drug-trafficking ties.

After the decision of the US authorities, Sheinbaum intensified calls to protect national sovereignty. “Who decides in Mexico, foreign agencies or the people? We will defend Mexico's sovereignty and independence,” Sheinbaum told supporters attending the two-year anniversary of her presidential victory.

Mexico's Congress last week approved a constitutional amendment allowing the annulment of elections in the event of “foreign interference.” Opposition leaders have criticized the law as a pretext for holding new elections if the results are unfavorable to the ruling party.

Despite diplomatic friction, Sheinbaum's domestic popularity remains solid. A survey published by El Financiero showed a confidence rating of 69%, reversing the slight downward trend that began in March.
