France stopped a Russian tanker in the Atlantic. Macron on the details of the action

A tanker from Russia was detained in the Atlantic. Macron wrote on the X platform that the tanker is called Tagor.

“Our determination is firm and complete. This intervention was carried out in the Atlantic, on the high seas, with the support of several partners, including the United Kingdom, in strict respect of maritime law. It is unacceptable for ships to circumvent international sanctions, violate maritime law and finance the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine for over four years. These ships, which do not respect the most basic rules of maritime navigation, also pose a threat to the environment and the safety of all of us,” said the French president.

Another tanker detention

In March 2026, France detained a tanker belonging to the Russian shadow fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. By using these ships, Moscow circumvents the sanctions imposed on it by Europe and the United States.

In April this year the decision to lift the arrest imposed on the ship was made by the court in Marseille after previously imposing a fine on the shipowner for “the inability to document the ship's flag”. The amount of the fine was not disclosed.

The tanker was allowed to leave France after paying the fine and the owner's commitment to “obtain a new flag for the ship as soon as possible,” the maritime prefecture said.
