Why does Băsescu think that “the process of appointing the prime minister, not necessarily the Government, should be accelerated”

Former president Traian Băsescu believes that the current head of state, Nicușor Dan, should “accelerate the process of appointing” a candidate for the position of prime minister, who would then have a completely different power in the negotiations for the formation of a parliamentary majority.
“The process of appointing the prime minister, not necessarily the Government, should be accelerated”, said Băsescu, on Sunday evening, on Romania TV, explaining that majorities can only be verified in the Parliament vote.
“You cannot know who has the majority until it is voted on in Parliament. And it is one thing when this majority is negotiated by an appointed prime minister and he has the credibility to negotiate a majority, and another when you say: “Don't come to Cotroceni without a majority”, he explained.
The former head of state also mentioned that “it is childish that, in a situation like Romania, you appoint a prime minister who is not politically committed”.
Traian Băsescu reiterated that, in his opinion, PSD has the ability to coagulate a majority if it is entrusted with the mandate in this regard, while “PNL cannot”. On the other hand, he affirmed that “there is no other credible majority” apart from the one that fell apart after the decision of the social democrats to withdraw the support of the liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, PSD + PNL + USR + UDMR + National Minorities.
A close relative of Traian Băsescu, among the names considered by Nicușor Dan
On President Nicușor Dan's list of potential prime ministers, there is also Eugen Tomac, his honorary adviser and the one who took over the leadership of the PMP from Traian Băsescu.
PSD agrees with the Tomac – prime minister scenario, say people from the party's leadership for HotNews.
Among those considered are Radu Burnete, presidential advisor for economic issues, Alexandru Nazare, the current Minister of Finance, or Delia Velculescu, head of the IMF mission in South Africa, according to official sources.
Sources from Cotroceni told HotNews that the new deadline for an announcement by the president regarding the name of the candidate for the position of prime minister has been moved after June 1.
Although several options were analyzed in the discussions in Cotroceni, such as the option of a technocrat or minority government, the parties did not reach a consensus.
