The result of the MApN investigation: what the military experts found in the remains of the drone with 30 kg of explosives that hit a block of flats in Galati
A technical investigation in which a team from the Ministry of National Defense also participated established that the object discovered on the night of May 29, 2026, in Galati, is a UAS-type aerial drone “Geranium-2”Russian-made, used in kamikaze missions.

According to official data, the device had a carbon fiber structure and inscriptions in the Cyrillic alphabet, and the analysis of the components indicates a KOMETA-type GNSS navigation system, capable of simultaneously using several satellite networks, MApN said in a statement.
Propulsion was provided by a four-piston thermal engine, and the warhead, of the high-explosive (HE) type, was approximately 30 kilograms of TNT equivalent and detonated on impact.
Following the incident recorded on 29.05.2026, approximately 02:00, in the STIREX area, str. BRĂILEI no. 50, bl. BR1B, sc. 2, et. 10, apt. 80, place GALAțI, GALAțI county, the technical investigation in which the MApN specialized team also participated concluded the following:
Type of suspicious object: UAS (aerial drone):
– Model: GERAN2, Russian manufacture (samples with the inscription “ГЕРАНЬ 2”, partially legible as “ГЕ___Ь 2” have been identified);
– Operational destination: single-use drone/IUD (kamikaze);
– Fuselage: remains with carbon fiber strength structure, Cyrillic inscriptions
– Wings: fragments with carbon fiber resistance structure;
– Propulsion system: thermal engine, boxer type, with 4 pistons, air-cooled, working in 2 strokes, and propellers;
– Electronic components: indicates the use of a KOMETA-type GNSS system, which allows the simultaneous location of satellite systems;
– Electronic servomotor: control and trajectory maintenance role of the UAS;
– Ammunition: the combat charge (exploded on impact) was of the High-Explosive (HE) type, weighing approximately 30 kg (TNT equivalent).

The target was initially detected at 01:46 in the airspace of Ukraine, about 19 kilometers from the Romanian border, near Reni, about 10 kilometers east of that town.
MApN experts state that the remains identified are similar to those recovered in previous incidents in the border area, including in Tulcea and Galați counties, where episodes attributed to the use of the same type of drone were reported.
We remind you that a drone crashed on Thursday night on a block of flats in Galati, the incident being followed by an explosion and fire at an apartment located on the 10th floor of the building. A RO-Alert message was issued for Brăila, Tulcea and Galați.
Two injured people received medical attention on the spot, then they were transported to the hospital. The incident triggered a maximum alert at the highest level, a CSAT meeting being called urgently.
On Sunday, President Nicușor Dan published, for his part, the evidence that confirms that the drone that hit Galațiul is Russian. The inscription in Cyrillic characters was identified on the recovered fragments “GERAN-2”and the analysis of the electronic components, navigation systems, control modules and the engine revealed complete similarities with other drones of the same type previously discovered in Romania.

The results of the investigation will be communicated to NATO allies and partners in the European Union, the president also stated.
