Canadian Prime Minister 'welcomes the Pope's leadership' on AI

“The Prime Minister and His Holiness discussed artificial intelligence (AI), and the Prime Minister welcomed the Pope's leadership in this area. They discussed the imperative that AI must serve humanity, starting with the protection of the individual. Prime Minister Carney expressed Canada's desire to be an international leader in responsible AI and tools that benefit the global community,” the release said.

The topic of the telephone conversation was also activities for peace in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Earlier, the Vatican announced that the occasion for the conversation was the papal encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity), which was published on May 25. Its topic is caring for people in the era of artificial intelligence.

Last Tuesday, Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada's long-announced AI strategy will be announced next week. It is expected to present more detailed plans in this regard. In its update of the country's economic situation, the Canadian government announced that the six main pillars of the strategy will include: protecting Canadians and democracy and building the foundations for sovereign AI.
