Team USA defeated Canada in the Olympic hockey tournament final, 2-1 in overtime, to capture the gold medal for the third time in history but first since 1980 on Sunday on the final day of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
The decisive goal for the United States was scored by Jack Hughes in the first two minutes of extra time.
“I love the USA. I love my teammates. It's unbelievable. The brotherhood on the USA Hockey team is so strong and we have so much support from former players. I'm so proud to be an American today,” said game hero Jack Hughes.
Also today, Eileen Gu, the athlete born in San Francisco who chose to represent her mother's native country, China, won the third Olympic gold medal of her career, respectively the third of any kind from this edition of the competition, by winning the halfpipe skiing event, according to The Athletic.
Day 16 also brought two Olympic titles for Sweden's athletes. Ebba Andersson won gold in the women's 50 km cross-country skiing event, and the Nordic country's national team triumphed in the women's curling final. On the bob-4 track, the German crews secured the first two places.
This evening the curtain will be drawn on the Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, through a lavish ceremony in the historic Olympic Arena in Verona, from 21.30.
