“They don’t drink here, because in every yard there is…” What is happening now in the “strawberry” village in Volyn

In the Volyn village of Khorokhorin, the owners have been growing strawberries for almost 20 years – in each yard there is a large plantation, on which the whole family usually works. According to the head of the district, Anatoly Melnik, this is why no one in their village abuses alcohol. He told Suspilny about how villagers make money from strawberries.

“They don’t drink here because in every yard there is a strawberry plantation,” he noted.

Melnik explained that the strawberry business in Khorokhorin began with the desire of the villagers to learn from the experience of their Polish neighbors, where people used to go en masse to earn money. Now they work for themselves, but the amount of harvest depends on good rainfall.

The headman said that about 250 hectares were allocated for strawberries in Khorokhorin, but due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country of the Russian Federation, it was necessary to reduce the planting of strawberries – there are not enough workers.

The villagers say: usually the berry picking starts at 6.00 and ends at 16.00. Some farmers have built dormitories for visiting workers. Procurers also come to the village and bring Khorokhorin strawberries to markets throughout the country.
