Although February is the month of the year with the poorest precipitation, the year 2026 was a big exception and it snowed well above average, especially in Muntenia. ANM data show that the precipitation in Bucharest was three times above average, and the month still has days. Snow returns and severe weather warnings have been issued.

In Bucharest, until February 25, 110.9 l/m2 were totaled at the Filaret weather station (half of which in a single day – on February 17), which means that the monthly precipitation norm was exceeded three times (35.3 l/m2), according to ANM data.

We remind you that there were two episodes of consistent snowfall in Bucharest, and the snow layer reached a thickness of 45 cm on February 18, a part melted later, and after another episode of snow, the layer reached 36 cm on February 22.

The months of February with the most snow and rain in Bucharest, in the last 125 years

  • 1954: 117.1 l/sq
  • 2026: 110.9 l/sq
  • 1969: 108.2 l/sq

At the Băneasa weather station, the maximum was 98.6 mm, in February 2018. The absolute maximum amount of precipitation for 24 hours in Bucharest fell on February 10, 1984, at the Filaret weather station: 60.9 l/m2.

ANM notes that February, although it is nationally the poorest month of the year in terms of precipitation – with a multi-year average of 32.8 l/m2 – this year broke out of these patterns, through the intense episodes of precipitation recorded in the southern half of the territory.

The intense precipitation in the southern half was brought by Mediterranean cyclones, and those recorded between February 23 and 25 in the intra-Carpathian area (isolated amounts of water over 30…40 l/m2 in the Western Carpathians and the Southern Carpathians) are associated with the evolution of an Icelandic cyclone.

Thus, until February 24, the average rainfall at the national level was 54.1 l/m2, but in the southern regions over 80 l/m2 (at the weather stations in Muntenia, the average rainfall was 81.8 l/m2).

Of these precipitations recorded in the south, including in Bucharest, a good part fell in three characteristic blizzard intervals (February 1 – 2, February 17 – 18 and February 21 – 22).

The average temperature until February 25 is 1.2 degrees at the level of the country, a value that is right on the reference climatological norm for the period 1991 – 2020.
