Bishops elected without the consent of the Pope. Schism in the Church is getting closer

In a special statement by the Superior General of the Society, Father Davide Pagliarani, the names of the four priests selected for episcopal consecration were announced. They are Father Pascal Schreiber from Switzerland, Father Michael Goldade from the United States, Father Michel Poinsinet de Sivry and Father Marc Hanappier, both from France. The ceremony is to take place on July 1 in Econe, Switzerland.

The Society argues that the election and consecration of new bishops are not intended to create a parallel authority in the Church or to claim jurisdiction. According to the statement, documentation regarding the selected priests had previously been forwarded to Pope Leo XIV along with explanations regarding the decision.

Difficult dialogue between the Vatican and the Lefebvrists. There was a threat of excommunication

The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X has been in conflict with the Vatican for years, mainly due to its rejection of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication imposed on the Society's bishops in 2009 and initiated doctrinal talks, but they did not bring full agreement.

Vatican, represented by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a formal warning to the Society on May 13. The hierarch warned that carrying out episcopal consecrations without a papal mandate would result in excommunication.
