Ukraine prepares civilians for anti-drone fight: mothers, taxi drivers and veterans learn to defend the skies

In Ukraine, air defense has become a mission in which not only the military, but also specially trained civilians participate. In a basement in the Kharkiv region, mothers, taxi drivers and veterans sit in front of monitors and remotely control automatic machine guns integrated into the national anti-drone defense system.

After weeks of training, these operators follow the trajectories of Russian drones on monitors and operate the weapons through video game-like interfaces, according to the BBC.
The mobilization of civilians comes amid the most intense wave of airstrikes launched by Russia: 1,500 drones and 56 missiles in 48 hours. Among the victims were two sisters from Kiev, Liubava and Vira, killed when their block was hit by a Russian missile.
However, Ukraine managed to intercept 94% of long-range drones and 73% of missiles, a much higher rate than in 2025. Ukraine's Ministry of Defense says the country has become “unfortunately, the most experienced in the world” in air defense.
At the heart of the system is Sky Map, a software that combines radars, sensors and artificial intelligence to detect any threat.
In parallel, Ukraine is mass-producing low-cost interceptors, such as the P1-SUN, a 3D-printed model that reaches 300 km/h and costs only $1,000.
In March, more than 30,000 Russian drones were destroyed with such devices alone.
As the private sector gets more involved, Russia is developing faster drones and using trap models to pinpoint Ukrainian defense positions. And Ukraine continues to strike strategic targets in Russia, fueling an accelerated race for innovation.
Despite all the progress, vulnerabilities remain: the lack of advanced interceptors like the Patriot and the difficulty of countering the FPV drones responsible for most casualties. And massive Russian attacks still risk oversaturating the system, giving way to tragedies like that of the Kiev sisters.
