The fire that broke out on the night from Saturday to Sunday in the Kalasatama district quickly spread from a balcony on the fourth floor to the roof of the building, built in 2016.
The apartments are unsuitable for use
About 30 fire brigade and rescue units took part in extinguishing one of the largest fires in Helsinki in recent years. The firefighting operation lasted about ten hours. Residents were evacuated and no one was seriously injured.
The case is being investigated by the police as a case of gross negligence posing a threat to public safety.
The roof of the block burned down completely. The fire also partially destroyed the staircases and largely the installations in the building. According to the authorities of the housing association, none of the tenants can return home. Although the fire did not affect all the apartments, due to damage caused by water and smoke, as well as connections in damaged installations, they are no longer suitable for use.
