MTS has launched a competition among architects to develop a new appearance for base stations. Together with the A-House club, as part of the A-Fest festival, the company will invite specialized bureaus to rethink the design of supports so that they fit more harmoniously into the urban environment. The winning project is planned to be implemented in Moscow in 2027 and then, if possible, extended to other cities, including Krasnoyarsk.
Today, base station towers are a familiar element of a modern city; without them, people’s daily lives, the operation of transport, urban and digital infrastructure are impossible. However, communication equipment is sometimes installed without taking into account the environment and architecture. The MTS initiative is aimed at finding and implementing a solution that would combine not only functionality, technology and the ability to launch 5G networks, but would also be harmoniously integrated into the urban landscape.
Applications for the “Changing the Usual” competition are accepted from May 19 to June 14, the prize fund is 3 million rubles. Russian and foreign architectural bureaus can participate. The results will be announced in the fall of 2026.
The jury will include famous architects, representatives of the construction industry and MTS experts. Compliance with the architectural brief, requirements for equipment placement, functionality and ergonomics, conceptual novelty and architectural expressiveness, feasibility and design logic, and economic efficiency will be assessed.
MTS Vice President for Marketing and Customer Experience Alexey Kulakov noted that communication technologies will become even more significant with the development of digital cities, robotization and unmanned vehicles.
“We set the task to find new forms and architectural images of communication facilities, to imagine what the city of the future will be like – functionally and aesthetically,” he said, adding that such objects should enrich the architectural landscape and shape the perception of the city.
The founder of the A-House platform, Daria Belyakova, emphasized that architecture today works not only with space, but also with how people perceive the city. “Even such utilitarian elements can become full-fledged architectural statements,” she is sure.
