Hummus has long ceased to be exotic and has confidently taken its place in the diet of healthy food lovers. Specialists from the regional Office of Rospotrebnadzor told Krasnoyarsk residents why the popular chickpea-based snack is healthy.

Hummus is a delicate paste of chickpea puree with the addition of olive oil, lemon juice, sesame tahini paste, garlic and spices. The main ingredient of the dish, chickpeas, is considered one of the oldest foods in the world. Previously, it was even used as a coffee substitute and added to bread.

According to experts, chickpeas are rich in vegetable protein – its content reaches 25%. It also contains dietary fiber, which helps digestion and supports intestinal microflora, B vitamins, as well as magnesium, iron and phosphorus.

Separately, Rospotrebnadzor emphasized that hummus does not contain gluten and lactose, and therefore is suitable for people intolerant to these components. In addition, the dish has a low glycemic index and helps keep you feeling full longer without sudden spikes in blood sugar.

Despite their low fat content, chickpeas are a source of healthy unsaturated fatty acids. However, legumes do not contain cholesterol.

Experts advise more often including chickpeas and other legumes in the diet, noting that it is not only healthy, but also tasty.
