When planting tomatoes – be sure to: 3 rules – and the tomatoes will bloom in 10 days

Planting tomatoes in the ground is the moment when the future harvest is laid. If the bushes stand and remain silent for weeks, it means something has gone wrong. Experienced agronomist Ksenia Davydova spoke about three reasons for delayed flowering.

Reason 1

When transplanting, the roots are always injured, even if the seedlings look vigorous. The plant switches all its efforts to restoring the root system. This usually takes 7–10 days, but in cold or hot weather it can take up to two weeks.

When planting in depth, a tomato needs not only to restore damaged roots, but also to grow new ones on the buried part of the stem – this is a double load. With inclined planting, flowering is delayed by 12–14 days.

Important: powerful roots do not provide more nutrition than the above-ground part allows. The leaves work like a pump: as much as they pull, the root pumps.

Reason 2

With an inclined landing, the first brush is formed 10–15 centimeters from the ground. It’s more humid there, there’s less air, and when watering, water gets directly onto the flowers—the setting is worse. The lower leaves turn yellow faster and have to be removed, which adds stress.

The main problem: when a tomato simultaneously restores roots and tries to hold the ovary, there is not enough nutrition – the bush itself discards this brush. The loss of the whole brush is noticeable in a short season.

Reason 3

If the bush is elongated, the stem is thin, the leaves are pale, the plant has already used up the reserve it should have brought into the ground. It first needs to stabilize, then grow roots, and only then return to development. Strong seedlings bloom 11 days earlier than elongated ones with the same care.

What helps: remove the buds before planting – the plant stops wasting energy on flowering when the root system is weak and recovers faster. Such seedlings must be planted strictly vertically, with support from the first day.

Simple rules

  1. If the seedlings allow, they should be planted strictly vertically. The hole is made deeper to lower the earthen ball below the soil level – this way the roots are restored without double load.
  2. If the seedlings have stretched out, they are placed at an angle of no more than 30–40 degrees, only the lower part of the stem is covered and all leaves are removed from the covered area. It is better to remove the buds on the bush at the time of planting.
  3. For the first 10 days after planting, do not rush with watering – the roots themselves seek moisture and gain strength faster.

With this approach, flowering begins 10–12 days earlier.
