The Russian Federation began to use more chemical weapons at the front – Ministry of Defense

The intensity of chemical attacks by the army of the aggressor country Russia against Ukraine has increased rapidly. This was stated by Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Valery Weber.

According to the Ministry of Defense, if in 2023 their use was predominantly sporadic, then since 2024 the intensity of attacks has increased rapidly.

Since the beginning of 2026, the occupiers have been using chemical munitions along the entire contact line. In total, 13,300 such cases were recorded during the great war.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine previously indicated that more than half of all cases of the use of hazardous chemicals by Russians occurred in April 2025.

Recently, the occupiers have predominantly used gas grenades of the K-51 and RG-VO types, filled with CS and CN chemicals, the General Staff noted. They cause severe irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract, lacrimation, coughing, suffocation, disorientation and temporary loss of combat effectiveness, the General Staff noted. In accordance with paragraph 5 of Art. 1 of the Convention on the Prohibition, Development, Production, Stockpiling, Use and Destruction of Chemical Weapons, the use of such substances as weapons of war is prohibited.
