Ivan Vethopeshernik

Very little information has been preserved about the Venerable John of the Ancient Cave (Paleolaurite), whose memory is celebrated on this day. The life of this saint, famous for his ascetic life and special piety, is contained in hagiographic literature, which is one of the main forms of church literature, and liturgical texts.

In Rus', on this day, peasant women went out into the field with canvas, bowed in all directions and, turning to the east, said: “Here is a new product for you, Mother Spring!” After this, they spread the cloth on the ground, put the cake on it and went home. This was done so that the spring would be good and, in gratitude for the gifts, produce flax and hemp in abundance. This ritual was called “dressing spring in new clothes.”
