Trump has sent an aircraft carrier strike group to the coast of Cuba

“The USS Nimitz has proven its combat power around the world, ensuring stability and protecting democracy from the Taiwan Strait to the Persian Gulf,” the release said.
Trump increases pressure on Cuba
The statement by the US Southern Command came shortly after the Donald Trump administration brought charges against the former president of Cuba and its informal leader Raul Castro.
The United States accuses the 94-year-old politician of conspiring to kill four people, including three US citizens. This concerns an incident from 1996, when four members of the Brothers to the Rescue organization set out on a humanitarian mission to help refugees from Cuba sailing on rafts. Cuban fighters shot down two civilian planes of this organization over international waters.
According to a Reuters source, the accusation against Castro is part of the policy of the Trump administration, which has previously called for regime change in Cuba.
In one of his recent statements, the US president spoke out against escalation in relations with Cuba. “I don't think it's necessary,” he noted in a conversation with journalists.
Relations between the US and Cuba have become more tense since Trump returned to the White House. The US president regularly criticizes the Cuban government and allows for the possibility of a “friendly takeover” of the island. From the beginning of 2026, Washington increased the pressure and introduced an oil blockade against Cuba. This led to an energy crisis and power outages across the island.
