On May 21, an air raid alert was announced in Latvia due to the threat of drones. The country's National Armed Forces (NBS) reported this in X.
A possible danger was declared in the Ludza, Kraslava and Rezekne regions. People were advised to go to shelters or take shelter behind two walls.
The army indicated it was monitoring the situation with NATO forces, sending additional air defense units to the eastern border.
“As long as Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues, a repetition of such cases when a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle flies or approaches Latvian airspace is possible,” the armed forces added.
Later, NBS reported the discovery of at least one drone in the Kraslovsky region. Local residents noticed the UAV and reported it to the authorities, writes Delfi. Residents of Latgale have been warned about a possible threat to airspace for the third day in a row.
The day before, the alarm was declared in neighboring Lithuania – the cause was said to be a drone, probably moving from Belarusian territory. The planes of the North Atlantic Alliance were alerted. The drone has not yet been found, Delfi notes.
