Veterinarians warn cat owners about hidden risks of household chemicals

May 19 8:00

Experts have listed the main threats of household chemicals to cats. According to the Saratov 24 TV channel, pets’ livers cannot cope with the breakdown of many substances that are safe for humans.

Quaternary ammonium compounds from antibacterial wipes and floor liquids have been linked to mouth ulcers and asthma in cats. The smell of bleach reminds cats of the pheromones of their relatives – the animal may begin to roll on the wet floor, rubbing the chemical into its fur. Furniture sprays and antistatic agents settle on wool and enter the body when washing. Dishwasher tablets contain alkalis that cause burns to mucous membranes. Aroma diffusers, when inhaled and licked from fur, lead to asthma, shortness of breath and liver damage.

The eco label does not guarantee safety for cats – it only means biodegradability for nature. Natural fragrances like limonene remain potent allergens for them.

In case of contact with chemicals, you need to remove the source, rinse the fur with warm water, if vapors are inhaled, take the cat to fresh air and immediately call the clinic. To be safe, keep products in locked cabinets, keep your cat away from the cleaning area until surfaces are dry, and do a final rinse with a clean, damp cloth.
