The administration of US President Donald Trump currently lacks a coordinated strategy regarding further actions in relations with Iran and ending the conflict. CNN reported this on May 16, citing sources.
Bloomberg reported that during a meeting between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the United States failed to obtain any real support from China regarding Iran. Beijing has not made any commitments on the Iran issue, and as a result, Washington has been unable to secure Chinese help to advance its initiatives towards Tehran.
Against this background, according to CNN sources, some officials, particularly in the Pentagon, are in favor of a tougher approach, including targeted military strikes to increase pressure on Tehran. Another part of the administration insists on continuing diplomatic negotiations as the main instrument of settlement.
Trump himself has shown a preference for the diplomatic route in recent weeks, but admits that Iran is in no hurry to change its position regarding a possible agreement.
Against the background of disagreements in the administration, Washington continues to look for a format for further actions, combining diplomatic contacts and political and economic pressure, but there is no final decision yet.
