The storms wreaked havoc in several areas of the country: flooded households and downed trees

The severe weather phenomena that affected Romania between May 16, 8 a.m. and May 17, 8 a.m. caused damage in several areas of the country. Several households were flooded and the storms brought down an electricity pole and several trees.

There were torrential downpours, lightning, gales and hail.

According to DSU's “Be Prepared” platform, 12 localities from 7 counties – Argeș, Caraș-Severin, Dâmbovița, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Prahova and Timiș – as well as the municipality of Bucharest reported incidents caused by extreme weather.

“In the context of the meteorological warnings issued for several regions of the country, characterized by torrential downpours, electrical discharges, wind intensifications and, in isolation, blizzards and hail, in the interval 05.16.2026, 08:00 – 05.17.2026, 08:00, punctual effects were recorded in 12 localities in 7 counties and in the municipality of Bucharest“,

Flooded households

Fire crews were mobilized in numerous emergency situations. According to the information:

“They acted to evacuate water from 1 house, 1 basement and 4 yards; removal of detached construction elements from 2 buildings; clearance of 9 trees and 1 collapsed electricity pole.”

Authorities remind citizens of the need to observe safety measures during dangerous weather phenomena.

“Avoiding travel and outdoor activities during periods of high atmospheric instability; avoiding areas with trees, poles or other structures that can be affected by strong winds; cleaning trenches and ditches to facilitate water drainage; not using open fire in strong wind conditions; avoiding crossing watercourses or approaching their banks in case of increased flows“, transmits DSU.
