Svitolina won the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome and won the 20th title in her career

The first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina became the winner of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Rome on May 16. Suspilne reported this.

In the final, the Ukrainian defeated the American Coco Goff in three sets. This was already the sixth personal meeting between the tennis players, and Svitolina approached the final with two victories in a row over her opponent.

The first set was an even fight – the opponents exchanged breaks until the score was 4:4, but in the end the Ukrainian was stronger, winning the game 6:4. In the second set, the fight continued on equal terms and reached a tiebreaker, where Goff was able to level the score in the match. The decisive game remained with Svitolina: with the score 2:2, she won four games in a row, scored a break twice and finished the match with a 6:2 victory.

In the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, Goff lost to Svitolina with a score of 1:2 in sets (4:6, 7:6, 2:6).


For Svitolina, this is the third WTA 1000 title in Rome (the previous ones were in 2017 and 2018) and the 20th trophy in total in her career. It is also her biggest victory in the last seven years – the last time she won a WTA Finals-level tournament was in 2018.

“Suspilne” recalled that Ukrainian tennis players in total already have four WTA titles this season, two of which belong to Svitolina.
