APCAO launches first multidisciplinary guideline for medical recovery of children with hematologic malignancies, with support from Kaizen Foundation

APCAO (Association of Parents of Children with Oncological Diseases) announces the official launch of the multidisciplinary guide “Medical Recovery of Children with Malignant Hematological Diseases”, a reference resource for pediatric oncology care in Romania, developed with the support of the Kaizen Foundation.
Presented on May 13, during a dedicated event organized in Bucharest, at the Fundeni Clinic Institute, the guide represents a national first, bringing together medical expertise and practical recovery approaches in a single structured resource, designed to support health professionals working with pediatric onco-hematological patients.
The guide brings together the expertise of renowned Romanian specialists in pediatric onco-hematology, medical recovery, physiotherapy and psychological care, including Prof. Univ. Dr. Anca Colita, Prof. Univ. Dr. Violeta Silvia Teodorescu, Prof. Univ. Dr. Mihaela Apostu, Dr. Liliana Vlădăreanu, Ș.L. Dr. Letitia-Elena Radu, Assistant. Univ. Dr. Andra Daniela Marcu, Fzt. Dr. Mariana Cristina Fărcășanu, Fzt. Christina Gianno and Dr. Ana-Maria Stan, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to recovery in pediatric oncology.
Structured in several sections, it covers: treatment-related complications (neurological, muscular, skeletal), integrated patient assessment methodologies, recovery planning and physiotherapy programmes, post-treatment recovery and long-term reintegration, as well as psychological assessment and support.
The guide will be distributed free of charge by APCAO to medical institutions and health professionals throughout Romania, ensuring wide access and practical use in clinical contexts.
“This guide responds to a real and urgent need, identified after years of working closely with children diagnosed with cancer and their families. Beyond treatment, recovery and quality of life are essential — and until now there has not been a comprehensive multidisciplinary resource in Romania to support this process. It is not just a medical tool, but a step forward in how we approach care, dignity and long-term outcomes for these children”said the President of APCAO, Amalia Năstase.
Development of the guideline was made possible through support from the Kaizen Foundation as part of a larger partnership focused on improving both medical outcomes and quality of life for pediatric oncology patients.
“Our role is to support initiatives that create meaningful and lasting change in people's lives. This guide stands out for bringing together medical expertise and practical applicability, with the potential to directly improve recovery outcomes for children across Romania. We are proud to support APCAO and the medical community in making this resource widely accessible.” said Kaizen Foundation President Panos Konstantopoulos.
The initiative is part of a larger collaboration (2025–2026) between APCAO and the Kaizen Foundation, which includes: support for the medical education of young doctors through doctoral scholarships, the development of Recovery Camps in Pediatric Oncology, programs dedicated to improving the quality of life of patients and their families, as well as ongoing support for the activities and sustainability of APCAO.

This approach continues the wider commitment of the Kaizen Foundation in Romania, after the first project carried out in 2024 to support the modernization of the Pediatric Hospital in Pitesti, alongside educational and environmental initiatives currently developed together with partners such as Flora & Fauna Romania.
