The BPN meeting is scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
Marian Neacșu, PSD deputy, said on Tuesday that the discussions for defining a parliamentary majority are ongoing, given that the head of state stated that he will not appoint a prime minister without the guarantee of clear support in Parliament, according to Agerpres.
Asked if there is any progress, Neacșu replied: “I think they are working on it”, emphasizing that “it's fair and normal” that the party members are first informed during the BPN meeting about the negotiations with the parliamentary groups and the independents.
On Monday and Tuesday, Sorin Grindeanu, the president of the PSD, had talks with the leader of the UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, with the representative of the national minorities, Varujan Pambuccian, as well as with unaffiliated parliamentarians. The objective is to form a majority that can support a new executive, in the context in which PNL and USR have announced that they will no longer enter a coalition with PSD.
Sources from the party state that the social democrats would prefer to restore the coalition with the liberals, with a PNL prime minister, but not with Ilie Bolojan, an option that seems increasingly difficult to achieve.
Other scenarios considered include a PSD–UDMR–minority government led by Sorin Grindeanu and supported by independents, a technocrat prime minister leading a political cabinet, or a PSD–UDMR minority government. The social democrats do not rule out going into the opposition either if a stable majority is not formed.
President Nicușor Dan is going to call the parties to consultations for the appointment of a new prime minister. The head of state said on Tuesday that the options for a government with parliamentary support are limited and that the option of a technocrat prime minister is “a scenario that has a chance”.
The head of state specified that, in discussions with party delegations, he will request guarantees regarding the existence of a majority before making a nomination.
“With the general title, the request I have to all the party delegations that we will meet with, for any of the government proposals, my question will be whether or not a majority has already been negotiated. This is the general answer. (…) And I don't think it is useful for Romania to do experiments in which we propose prime ministers and let them see if they get a majority or not.” said the president.
Nicușor Dan also emphasized that he wants, following the consultations, to result in a prime minister's proposal and a set of common program points that can coagulate a parliamentary majority.
Asked about a possible technocrat government, the president reiterated:
“It is a scenario that has chances”.
