“Not a colony, but a free country.” The head of Venezuela responded to Trump's words about the “51st state”

Venezuela does not intend to be part of the United States and will remain independent. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said this at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, as quoted by the Independent.

Earlier Monday, speaking on Fox News, Trump said he was “seriously considering” making Venezuela the 51st US state.

Rodriguez vehemently rejected the idea.

“We will continue to defend our integrity, our sovereignty, our independence, our history,” she said, emphasizing that Venezuela is “not a colony, but a free country.”

Acting The president indicated that Caracas and Washington maintain contacts and are working on “cooperation and mutual understanding.”

On May 12, Trump posted a map on Truth Social showing Venezuela in the colors of the American flag and labeled as the “51st state.”
