Drone incidents in Latvia. “We will take action to protect residents”

The Prime Minister's statement concerns a series of recent incidents on Latvian territory involving Ukrainian drones. These machines flew from the Russian side during attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russian facilities located on the Gulf of Finland. In one case, fuel tanks located several dozen kilometers from the eastern border of Latvia were damaged.
Compensation mechanism for victims
Silina said that coalition partners in the Latvian government are working on a legal solution that will enable the payment of benefits from the state budget. Assistance would go to residents and entrepreneurs affected by the effects of operations using military drones, as well as other forms of hybrid threats. The system is to operate regardless of whether a state of emergency has been introduced in the country. Work on a legal solution is also the government's response to the public mood in the border regions.
Residents of eastern Latvia fear drones
According to politicians from the ruling coalition, the mood in the border regions of the country is clearly deteriorating. Residents of eastern Latvia are increasingly concerned about potential further incidents with drones. Concerns are also reinforced by the growing number of alerts issued by services warning against threats in the airspace.
