Ukraine has expanded the list of states with which it accepts dual citizenship. Romania, included together with 27 other countries

Ukraine has changed the list of countries with which it accepts dual citizenship agreements, including 29 new states, including Romania, the Romanian Government announced on Tuesday.
The Kiev executive adopted, on May 8, a “decree on the amendments to the list of states whose citizens (subjects) acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified procedure”, according to Agerpres.
Previously, the initial list included only five countries, namely Canada, Germany, Poland, the USA and the Czech Republic.
However, through the new normative act, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Greece, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Finland, France, Croatia, Switzerland and Sweden were added.
Under this legislation, Ukrainian citizens can acquire a second citizenship without having to renounce Ukrainian citizenship.
Also, the normative act allows ethnic Ukrainians from the respective states to become Ukrainian citizens in a simplified procedure.
The Ukrainian lawyer of Romanian origin, Eugen Pătraș, previously opined that the decision to limit to five the list of countries for which dual citizenship is accepted represents a form of underappreciation of Romania by the Kyiv authorities after the new law on the acquisition and preservation of Ukrainian citizenship, entered into force on January 16, caused dissatisfaction in the Romanian community in Ukraine.
The normative act previously adopted by the Kyiv authorities stipulated the conditions under which multiple citizenship can be acquired, as well as the list of countries with which Ukraine accepts dual citizenship agreements. There were five countries on the list, three of which were from Europe and two from the American continent, namely Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, the United States of America and Canada. The list did not include Romania, which worried the Romanians in Ukraine.

“This decision represents an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between Romania and Ukraine and reflects the positive evolution of the dialogue between the two states, as well as the common commitment to support European values and strengthen ties between the citizens of the two countries,” the Executive sent in a press release.
