Skepticism about PURL is growing in Europe; some countries are not supplying Patriot missiles to Ukraine – WP

There is growing skepticism in Europe about the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, through which US allies purchase American weapons for Ukraine. The Washington Post reported this on May 11, citing diplomats and officials.

According to the publication, concern in Europe is growing against the backdrop of the US war against Iran, which has led to the depletion of American reserves of precision weapons. This, in turn, already affects the pace of implementation of defense contracts.

NATO launched PURL to ensure that European countries finance the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine, in particular air defense systems, which are critical to protecting Ukrainian cities from attacks by the aggressor country of the Russian Federation.

However, as the publication writes, some European capitals have become more cautious about new contributions to the program due to uncertainty about the use of funds and delivery delays. Some countries generally refuse to transfer missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine; which ones exactly are not specified in the material. Although, according to media reports, earlier this year the administration of US President Donald Trump forced several European countries to send Ukraine their own stocks of Patriot missiles.

Additional tension was caused by reports that some of the funds could be used not only to help Ukraine, but also to replenish American military supplies.

Despite this, NATO says that countries have already allocated more than $5.5 billion under PURL, and arms supplies to Ukraine continue.
