Folk calendar
Birch tree
As the name of the holiday suggests, in Rus' this day was dedicated to birch sap. They began to collect it and store it for future use.
It was believed that the most delicious and healing sap flows in the upper branches of the tree, and it can cure any sick person. However, it was not recommended to prepare juice on a foggy or rainy day – such a drink would have little benefit.
From this day on, birch sap began to be given to patients who suffered from spring fevers. In Rus' it was believed that birch sap could help with scurvy, edema, furunculosis, arthritis, and gout. It was also used as a diuretic.
We watched the weather that day: a clear sunrise meant a clear summer. If the night is warm and starry, this promises a good harvest. There was also such an unusual omen for the harvest: on this day it was necessary to have as much lunch as possible – and then the beds and arable lands would be fertile.
