Dua Lipa, at war with Samsung. The tech giant, accused of using his image to sell televisions

British singer Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, seeking at least $15 million in damages, accusing the South Korean tech giant of using her image without permission to promote its TVs, Reuters reports.
The company is accused of using a copyrighted image of the pop star on the front of cardboard boxes containing televisions intended for sale, allowing Samsung to benefit from what appeared to be an endorsement of the product by her.
The image allegedly used on the TV boxes is titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” and Lipa owns all right, title and interest in the image, according to court filings. The lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court in California.
A Samsung Electronics spokesman declined to comment, saying it could not comment on pending litigation, while lawyers for the singer did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.
In addition to copyright and trademark infringement, Dua Lipa accused Samsung Electronics of image copyright infringement.
Lipa's lawyers attached screenshots of social media posts and comments to the filing, arguing that the image of the pop star on the front of the cartons led potential customers to buy the product.
One of these screenshots shows a fan commenting that he would buy the TV “just because Dua is on it”.
The singer learned of Samsung's alleged copyright infringement last June and asked to stop using her image, but the electronics maker has repeatedly refused to do so, her lawyers said.
Samsung's alleged unauthorized use of Dua Lipa's image has “caused and continues to cause the dilution” of the pop star's “brand identity and commercial reputation” by “falsely conveying to the consumer public that she endorses and endorses” the products in question, defense attorneys for the triple Grammy-winning singer added.
