Jair Bolsonaro's early release blocked by a Brazilian Supreme Court judge

Alexandre de Moraes, a judge at the Supreme Court of Brazil, has blocked the considerable reduction of the 27-year prison sentence to which former President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced for plotting a coup after he lost the presidential election in 2022, reports Reuters.
Two Brazilian parties and the ABI media association challenged the law allowing Bolsonaro's release in 2028 in court.
Last month, Congress overrode a veto by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the law, but the plaintiffs asked the Brazilian Supreme Court to block the law on grounds of unconstitutionality.
Passed last year, the law would have reduced Bolsonaro's sentence to just over two years and would also have reduced the sentences of those convicted in a January 2023 riot, when Bolsonaro supporters stormed and looted the presidential palace, the Supreme Court and Congress.
Moraes ruled that the law will not be enforced until the supreme court rules on requests to overturn it.
So far, Bolsonaro's lawyers have not asked the court to consider reducing the sentence based on this law.
The former president is serving his sentence under house arrest, for medical reasons.
