The political crisis in Bucharest, in the Ukrainian press: “Romania could become a new Viktor Orbán for the EU”

The Ukrainian publication European Pravda analyzes the political crisis in Romania and warns that a possible coming to power of the AUR party could radically change the relations between Bucharest and Kiev, including the support given to Ukraine in the war with Russia.

In the analysis published after the start of consultations for the formation of a new governing coalition in Bucharest, Ukrainian journalists claim that Romania is going through one of the most complicated political periods in recent years.

The crisis intensified after the Romanian Parliament dismissed the pro-European and pro-Ukraine government led by Ilie Bolojan.

The publication notes the fact that the censure motion was initiated by the Social Democratic Party, a party that was in the governing coalition until then and considered the largest parliamentary force in Romania.

“The most dangerous scenario for Ukraine”

In the cited analysis, Romanian political expert Serhii Herasymchuk states that the main risk for Ukraine is the organization of early parliamentary elections.

According to him, AUR would have a very high chance of winning the election, given that the party is currently credited with approximately 34% of voting intentions.

“The most critical scenario for Ukraine would be early parliamentary elections in Romania, because AUR would have a very high chance of winning them”notes European Pravda.

According to Romanian legislation, parliamentarians have two attempts and two months to form a parliamentary majority and appoint a new prime minister.

The Ukrainian analyst warns that, if the AUR will become the largest parliamentary force, the influence of the formation will increase considerably.

In this context, one of the traditional parties could decide to give up its refusal to collaborate with the extreme right and enter into a coalition with AUR.

“The end of Romania's support for Ukraine”

According to the Ukrainian publication, the coming to power of AUR would have direct consequences on the relations between Romania and Ukraine.

“This would mean the end of Romania's support for Ukraine. AUR representatives have repeatedly promised exactly this”the analysis shows.

European Pravda warns that Romania could start to block or negotiate hard at the European level every new package of sanctions against Russia, assuming a role similar to that played by Viktor Orbán in recent years.

The publication also claims that tensions related to the issue of national minorities could reappear, a topic that the Romanian governments have largely avoided in their relationship with Kiev.

The analysis also shows that a possible AUR government would also affect the regional cooperation between Romania, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, especially the trilateral format known as “Odessa Triangle”, used for joint energy and infrastructure projects.

“For AUR, Ukraine is considered hostile, and Moldova is not even seen as a truly independent state,” notes European Pravda.

Nicusor Dan is trying to restore the pro-European coalition

The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, declared that he will not allow the formation of an anti-European coalition, arguing that the pro-Western direction of the country is provided for in the Constitution, and he is its guarantor.

According to the Ukrainian publication, Nicusor Dan's statements are explainable in the context in which he came to the leadership of the state against the background of a strong pro-European wave and is now trying to restore the majority without the AUR.
