“Sultan-Ali Shirzadi-Fakhr was hanged this (Thursday) morning on charges of belonging to the terrorist group People's Mujahideen (MEK) and collaborating with the Israeli regime's Mossad spy service”submitted the website of the judicial authority Mizan Online.
According to the same source, the man was sentenced to death for “war against Allah” (moharebeh), being accused of participating in hostile operations against the Islamic Republic. Authorities did not specify when he was arrested.
It is the ninth execution of a member of the MEK since the beginning of the conflict in Iran, the cited source notes. Mizan Online claims that the man lived for a while in Spain, without giving details about any other nationalities.
In recent months, Iran has stepped up executions, following the outbreak of war with Israel and the United States. Several people have been accused of ties to Israel.
But human rights organizations accuse Iranian authorities of trying capital cases behind closed doors, using testimony obtained under duress and not allowing defendants to challenge their evidence.
A truce, initially for a period of two weeks, has been in effect since April 8.
