Fire at Chernobyl: the radioactive zone is engulfed in flames, and war mines make it difficult for firefighters to intervene

Chernobyl Alert: A massive fire has broken out in the exclusion zone, quickly engulfing large areas of contaminated forest, while high winds and drought conditions favor the spread of flames.
A massive forest fire has broken out in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, and has already consumed more than 1,100 hectares of forest, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. The flames spread quickly, fueled by strong winds and weather conditions.

Ukrainian authorities warn that the intervention of firefighting teams is seriously hampered by several factors, including the difficult terrain and the danger posed by land mines left over from the armed conflict in the area. In certain sectors, fire brigade access is impossible, forcing the temporary suspension of operations.
“The situation is complicated by unfavorable weather conditions, gusts of wind and the presence of mines, which significantly limit interventions“, SES representatives sent.
Currently, the intervention teams are acting as an emergency, with additional personnel and specialized equipment being mobilized.

Firefighters are working extended shifts to limit the fire's spread and protect adjacent forest areas.
The exclusion zone from Chernobyl remains one of the most sensitive regions from a safety point of view, the level of radioactive contamination being still high in certain perimeters, which further complicates the intervention operations.
Efforts to extinguish the fire are continuing, but authorities cannot yet estimate when the fire will be completely under control.
