US President Donald Trump postponed until July 4 the introduction of high duties on cars from the European Union after a telephone conversation with the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. He wrote about this on May 7th in Thruth Social.
On May 1, Trump announced that tariffs on cars produced in the EU would be increased from 15% to 25% this week.
As the head of the White House noted after a conversation with von der Leyen, the European Union has time to fully comply with the terms of the trade agreement between the US and the EU. However, it is unclear what violations by the EU Trump was referring to, Euronews pointed out.
“I have waited patiently… A promise was made that the EU would do its part [торгового] agreement and, as agreed, will reduce its tariffs to zero! “I have agreed to give them until our nation's 250th anniversary or, unfortunately, their tariffs will immediately jump to much higher levels,” Trump wrote.
He called the conversation with the head of the European Commission “wonderful,” while von der Leyen, for his part, called it “very good.”
Von der Leyen stressed that both sides are committed to implementing the agreement.
“By early July there will be significant progress in reducing tariffs,” she wrote.
According to Euronews, the European Parliament and member states are currently negotiating a bill that would eliminate tariffs against the United States. The next round on May 6 failed, the next attempt was on May 19.
