The PNL must analyze whether it remains in government: “There is no risk of a break in the party.” What Predoiu says about the option of being prime minister

The National Liberal Party must decide, following internal consultations, whether to maintain its role in the current governing formula, declared the first vice-president of the PNL, Cătălin Predoiu. He also emphasized that political responsibility towards Romania must come before electoral calculations. Asked if he is considering becoming the PNL prime minister's proposal, Predoiu answered: “The short answer is no.”

Predoiu explained that the resolution voted in the party, which politically condemned the PSD gesture of initiating and supporting the motion, was a “natural and logical” one, representing a signal of internal solidarity.
“What we're really, honestly concerned about is whether or not we're abandoning the responsibility of government,” said the liberal leader on Thursday, May 7, quoted by Antena 3.
He argued that, in the current political context, the position of prime minister is an essential element for the PNL's strategic relevance on the political scene.
“A party that has 14% at the moment remains relevant on the political stage to the extent that it holds the premiership. This is the key point of our strategic relevance,” Predoiu told journalists.
Asked if he is considering becoming the PNL prime minister's proposal, Predoiu answered: “The short answer is no.”
The Liberal first vice-president insisted the debate within the party was normal and there was no risk of a split.
“There is zero risk of the party splitting into two factions. It is a debate of ideas, it was a very good meeting where many colleagues expressed their views,” he said.
Predoiu specified that, in the event that the PNL decides to enter the opposition, it will respect the party's decision, including regarding its governmental function.
“There is never any question of disobeying the party's decision,” stressed the liberal leader.
He reiterated that the optimal solution, in his opinion, is to continue participating in the government, but the final decision must be taken after extensive consultations within the party and in dialogue with the leadership of the formation.
