Hundreds of people gathered in Victoriei Square, after a new case of Femicide. “Love does not mean fear”

Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday night in Victoriei Square to protest against domestic violence, after a pregnant woman was killed with a ax in Prahova County.

The protest was organized by the Center of the Branch and several civic organizations, after a 22 -year -old girl was killed with the ax, in Prahova county, by the former partner, right in front of her mother and the two children. It is the 26th case of this year's Femicide in Romania.
Messages and flowers in the memory of victims
In front of the Government headquarters, the protesters displayed banners with messages such as: “Love does not mean fear “,” safety for all women ” or “Hundreds of women are dead, this is not right.” People brought flowers and candles to commemorate victims killed in acts of domestic violence.
It is the second protest in June. The first one took place after, at the end of May, another pregnant young woman was fatally shot by a man, in a residential complex near Bucharest, while holding her child in her arms. The attacker later committed suicide.
A collective cry against the carelessness of the authorities
The case of Prahova has aroused anger and revolt. According to a statement from the organizers, the woman killed on June 16 had managed to flee from an abusive relationship and she had sheltered with the children to her parents. The aggressor, a 37 -year -old man, continued to harass her. “The police visited the aggressor in the morning of the crime, but left it free, thus allowing the tragedy ”is shown in the statement.
Nicușor Dan: “It is imperative for the victims to be believed and protected”
The general mayor of the Capital, Nicușor Dan, sent a message of support for protest, stating that “Civil society requires urgent measures to stop violence against femaleor “he asked the authorities, especially the police, prosecutors and judges, to treat each case”with maximum seriousness”.
Firm requests to the Romanian state
The representatives of the Center Filia warn that violence against women is insufficiently sanctioned and sometimes even tolerated by institutions that should protect the victims. “Silence and ignorance are complicit in crime ”say the organizers.
The protesters have formulated a clear list of claims, including: the application of laws in all cases of violence, risk assessment, adequate financing for services for victims and aggressors, professional training for staff involved in prevention, centralizing data on femics and gender violence, rapid investigation of cases, the possibility of victims, Consent and equality of gender in schools, as well as the constant involvement of feminist organizations in the elaboration of public policies.
We need a firm and solidary response from the society and institutions to stop the fatal violence that continues to hit the women in Romania, the organizers transmit.
