Bayern Munich – PSG 1-1, 5-6 overall in the Champions League semi-finals. The major newspapers in France and Germany reacted “warmly” after the Parisians qualified for the UCL final.

“PSG have done it again,” headlined L'Equipe, referring to the Parisians' second consecutive Champions League final. Last year, PSG beat Inter in the last act with 5-0.

L'Equipe, conclusions immediately after PSG's qualification

“With great efforts, the reigning European champions earned a draw at Bayern and qualified for the final against Arsenal after a 5-4 victory in the first leg.

Kane replied too late to the goal scored by Dembélé. Paris remain in contention for a continental double and are relishing the moment,” continued L'Equipe.

What Bild writes after Bayern's elimination: “OUT with scandal”

“Bayern eliminated after refereeing scandal!” captioned Bild, who went on to focus on the 31st-minute phase when Joao Neves was hit in the hand by the ball after Vitinha's clearance.

“A lot happened in this explosive match! Bayern are eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League. After the “match of the century” in Paris (4-5), the 1-1 draw in the second leg in Munich against the trophy holder Paris Saint-Germain is not enough to qualify. The dream of winning the trophy and the third treble in the club's history has been dashed.

Unlike the football spectacle in the French capital, this time the attention is not focused on the 22 stars on the field, but – to the great displeasure of the Bavarian team – on referee João Pinheiro (38 years old).

The inexperienced Portuguese (on his 15th Champions League appearance and first semi-final) drew the ire of the Munich crowd with three controversial decisions,” the Germans continued.

On Neves' handball: “It always has to be a penalty”

“First, the Portuguese whistled a surprisingly early offside on Kane (23'), although Nuno Mendes could have been the one to take the out-of-position striker out of the game. Then came the first moment of major rebellion: Nuno Mendes, already on a yellow card, touched the ball with an outstretched arm.

The Bavarians, out of their minds, demanded a second yellow and the removal of the PSG star. But the referee awarded a free kick for Paris (28') due to an alleged handball by Laimer – wrong decision! Laimer hit the ball with his abdomen and thigh.

Just eight minutes later, another moment of maximum tension followed – the entire stadium called for a penalty! Vitinha cleared the ball from his own box, and João Neves, on the path, blocked the ball with his hand. However, Pinheiro and the officials in the VAR room let the game continue.

BILD refereeing expert Manuel Gräfe (52 years old) said: «This is a penalty kick and it must always be a penalty because it is a deliberate movement towards the ball».

According to the interpretation of the IFAB regulation (the international body that decides on changes to the laws of the game), it is specified that, if the ball comes from a teammate and does not go towards the goal, no penalty is awarded”, the Germans also wrote.
