Evsei – Oats, sift out

Several saints of Eusebius are mentioned in Christian naming books. The most famous among them are the martyr Eusebius, who lived in the 1st century; Eusebius of Nicodmedia, executed by Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century; Venerable Eusebius the Hermit, who became a hermit in the 4th century.

The people claimed that Yevsey was pushing everyone to the ground, and that the torment was sticking to people. To get rid of the misfortune, they prayed and washed themselves with holy water.

By this day it was necessary to finish sowing oats – hence Yevsey’s nickname. Oats had to be sown strictly at a certain time, regardless of the weather and soil conditions. However, there were also special signs. It was possible to sow oats when the birch tree begins to bloom, when winged ants appear, when fluff flies from the willow tree. Some signs were used to judge the future harvest; It was considered a good omen if a lot of mosquitoes appeared on Yevsey.

Even if the weather was good at the beginning of May, the peasants were in no hurry to rejoice. They knew that after Evseev's day there could be another 12 days of frost.
