One of the largest energy storage facilities in Europe will be built near Płock. The contract has been signed

Even with the current renewable energy capacity in Poland, it sometimes happens that we have to subsidize the export of electricity when there is overproduction of energy from windmills or photovoltaics. PSE often decides to shut down wind or photovoltaic farms. The solution to such system problems is energy storage. In the current circumstances, such investments can count on large differences between the price of stored energy at peak times and the price in the evening, when photovoltaics stop working.
Once wind farms are launched in the Baltic Sea, the problem will only increase. Wind farms and photovoltaic installations produce energy depending on whether the wind is blowing and the sun is shining, and not as much energy as is needed in the system at a given moment. The new project, which will begin commercial operation in the coming years, will help reduce this problem.
The international Axpo group and the Polish R.Power, a company whose bonds are listed on the public market, have signed another multi-year contract to optimize the operation of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Poland. New a facility with a power of 300 MW and a capacity of 1,200 MWh will be built in Dzięgielewo in the province. Masovian Voivodeship.

For comparison, the currently largest battery energy storage facility in Europe, built on post-mining areas, is located in Germany. Its power is 1,000 MW and capacity is 4 GWh. The warehouse in Dzięgielewo would be among the four largest in Europe.
The agreement between Axpo and R.Power, valid until 2038, is based on a profit sharing mechanism and a minimum revenue guarantee, which ensures the financial stability of the project.
The largest energy storage facility in Poland
The energy storage in Dzięgielewo will be an important element of the national power system. Thanks to its scale, it will enable the provision of system services and the effective management of surplus energy from renewable sources. This project is the next step in developing cooperation between Axpo and R.Power, which has previously implemented, among others, warehouse in Jedwabno with a capacity of 150 MW and a capacity of 300 MWh.
— Partnership with R.Power on the project in Dzięgielewo is another step in building Axpo's leading position in the segment of large-scale energy storage in Poland. Our goal remains to maximize the value of partners' assets throughout the entire life cycle – from participation in energy and system services markets to a commercialization model adapted to banking requirements – said Mateusz Marczewski, managing director of Axpo Polska.
Long-term sales contracts
R.Power and Axpo have a long-term partnership, including: long-term energy sales agreements (PPA) and optimization of energy storage operations.
— Long-term commercialization agreements such as this one are crucial not only for the implementation of our projects, but also create the foundations for the development of large-scale energy storage in promising markets such as Poland – noted Rafał Hajduk, chief commercial director at R.Power.
Thanks to the new contract, the total contracted storage capacity of R.Power in Poland will increase to 450 MW and the capacity to 1,500 MWh. Both companies emphasize that cooperation on the project in Dzięgielewo sets a new benchmark for the development of BESS technology in the region.
Axpo, present on the Polish market for 25 years, is one of the largest independent energy sellers and recipients of energy from renewable sources. The company manages a renewable energy portfolio of approximately 16 TWh and develops solar, biogas projects and energy storage systems.
Optimizing the operation of energy storage facilities, such as the one in Dzięgielewo, includes managing battery charging and discharging and reserving capacity for system services. Thanks to this solution, it is possible to maximize investment income and minimize financial risk for project owners.
R.Power is an independent power producer (IPP) operating in multiple renewable technologies in six European markets. The company operates throughout the entire project value chain – from acquisition and development, through commercialization, to long-term operation. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Warsaw, R.Power has evolved into a large energy producer with a portfolio of 1.4 GW of projects operational or under construction. R.Power's European growth strategy focuses on a significant portfolio of advanced, grid-secured energy storage (BESS) projects, both standalone and hybrid, combined with photovoltaics. R.Power bonds are listed on the public market.
