Krasnoyarsk residents were explained why they should not believe the “five second rule” for fallen food

Rospotrebnadzor specialists reminded Krasnoyarsk residents that food that falls on the floor does not become safe, even if it is immediately picked up.
The so-called “five second rule” does not protect the product from contamination. Bacteria and dirt particles can land on food almost immediately after contact with the surface. The risk depends on where exactly the product falls. On a smooth floor, contact with the surface is closer than on a carpet, but contamination occurs in any case. The food itself also matters.

A dry cookie or cracker is less contaminated than a burger, pizza, or food with sauce. Wet food picks up germs and dirt from the surface faster. If an apple falls on the floor, you can eat it only after washing it thoroughly. It is also important to consider the cleanliness of the floor. If it has been walked on in street shoes or a pet has recently passed by, the risk of pathogenic bacteria entering becomes higher.
Experts note that the myth about the benefits of less purity for the immune system has not been confirmed by scientific research. Compliance with hygiene rules at home and in the kitchen, on the contrary, reduces the risk of infections, including foodborne ones. If the fallen product cannot be washed or processed, it is better to discard it.
