DOCUMENT. The PNL unanimously decided to enter the opposition after the motion that dismissed the government: “PSD is responsible for worsening the political crisis. It must take over the government”

The PNL leadership decided on Tuesday night for the party to go into opposition, with the liberals passing a resolution saying PSD must take over the government, being the party that caused the fall of the Bolojan government.

The liberals entered the meeting today, from 5:00 p.m., shortly after the PSD-AUR censure motion was adopted, which dismissed the Bolojan Government.

After a meeting that lasted over 5 hours, Ilie Bolojan and other PNL leaders came out to make statements and announced that the party unanimously decided to enter the opposition. According to HotNews sources, the vote to enter the opposition was passed unanimously with 50 votes, but four liberals did not vote.

Behind Bolojan stood all those who participated in the meeting, except for Catalin Predoiu, who left before the press statements, Nicoleta Pauliuc, Hubert Thuma and Toma Petcu. All are opposed to entering the opposition and do not rule out the resumption of negotiations with the PSD.

“It was a long debate, with discussions related to the trajectory of the PNL, what we have to do for Romania and for the citizens of the country. The PNL confirms that it is a party with dignity, which will build a pole of modernization, to a modern Romania, without obstacles, to a state that creates conditions of prosperity for the citizens of our country”, said the president of the PNL Ilie Bolojan, after which he let the first vice-president Ciprian Ciucu read the decision adopted by the party leadership.

We present below the full text of the decision adopted by PNL:

“Considering the result of the vote expressed in the Romanian Parliament on the motion initiated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Romanian Union (AUR), which de facto created a new parliamentary majority, the National Liberal Party (PNL), in accordance with the statutory decisions previously adopted in response to the political crisis triggered by the PSD, adopts this decision:

  1. Clarification of political responsibility

The political crisis was generated by the PSD through the systematic boycott of the Government Program in the negotiation and adoption of which it participated directly. The reforms assumed by this program by all the parties that adopted it were delayed or compromised by the social democratic leaders. The PSD is thus responsible for aggravating the political crisis, which culminated in the initiation and voting of the no-confidence motion. By associating with the initiation and voting of the censure motion, AUR shares political responsibility equally with PSD. The parties that created the political crisis have a duty to bear the consequences.

2. The assumption of government by the new majority created by the PSD

PSD acted to break up the governing coalition formed last year, and then, together with AUR, created the parliamentary majority for the initiation and adoption of the motion of censure and dismissal of the Government. Consequently, the PSD should take over the government and not run away from responsibility, as it has done in recent months.

Given that the PSD did not respect its commitments, nor the coalition partners, and acted irresponsibly in this difficult context for Romania, it is no longer a credible partner for the PNL in the process of forming a new government.

3. The position of the PNL in the current political context

In this new political context, PNL maintains its decisions adopted by statutory forums and parliamentary groups and will remain in opposition, exercising an active, responsible and constructive role, in the interest of citizens and economic stability.

4. PNL commitments

PNL reaffirms its commitments, which it will support in opposition with all parliamentary means in the following period:

  • finalizing the objectives of the PNRR and adopting the legislation to meet the milestones;
  • supporting the economic recovery program;
  • the OECD accession process;
  • maintaining budget balances.

The leadership of the Central Political Bureau met at 17.00, in a meeting at the Parliament Palace. PNL leaders from the territory also participate in the meeting.

Shortly after the beginning of the meeting, the liberals also voted to strengthen the resolutions already adopted by the party, according to which the PNL will no longer collaborate with the PSD. 34 Liberals voted in favor and 10 abstained, according to HotNews sources.
