Tomsk microsurgeon Andrey Baitinger was part of a delegation of ten doctors who went to the Democratic Republic of the Congo on a charitable mission. Doctors will also help refugees affected by military operations on the border with Rwanda.
As RIA Tomsk writes with reference to a representative of the Research Institute of Microsurgery, Baitinger went to Africa as part of a medical mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Doctors will examine local residents who need highly qualified care and perform dozens of operations.
Now specialists work at the Kinshasa University Hospital on the basis of one of the three leading universities in the republic. From May 10, the delegation will set up headquarters in the city of Kisangani in northeastern Congo, where refugees from the war zone are flocking.
The conflict between Congo and Rwanda escalated in 2022. It is associated with support for the M23 rebel movement in eastern Congo, as well as historical tensions between the Tutsi and Hutu peoples and the struggle for control over mineral resources. In June 2025, the parties signed a preliminary peace agreement, but fighting continues and the humanitarian situation remains dire.
