Wadephul, quoted by Reuters, emphasized that Germany should also maintain a close dialogue with the United States to determine which decisions have already been finally made and what opportunities Berlin has to influence them.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Sunday in a television interview that – despite differences of opinion on the war with Iran – the US remains his country's most important partner in NATO. He stressed that the reduction of American troops in Germany has been the subject of talks for a long time and is not related to his dispute with US President Donald Trump.

Earlier, NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart announced that the Alliance is cooperating with the US to understand the details of the administration's decision in Washington on the planned withdrawal of some US troops from Germany.

The Pentagon announced on Friday that it will withdraw approximately 5,000 weapons over the next 6-12 months. soldiers from Germany (currently there are between 35,000 and 40,000 US soldiers stationed in this country). According to the US Ministry of Defense, this is the result of internal analyses, but the decision on this matter was announced after Trump reacted angrily to Merz's criticism of the war with Iran.

Trump also talked about the possible withdrawal of troops from Italy and Spain, criticizing these two countries for the lack of aid provided to the US in the war with Iran.
