The coldest beginning of May in the history of weather measurements in Romania. 111-year-old weather records were also broken

May 2026 started with extremely cold weather, with temperatures dropping to -13 degrees Celsius in the mountains and frost in many areas. At 13 weather stations there were new absolute cold records for the fifth month, according to the ANM data sent to HotNews.ro.

  • After the unusual cold wave in April, a mass of warm air brings summer temperatures much higher than normal for the period at the beginning of May, which will even rise to 29-30 degrees in some areas, meteorologists announced on Monday.

In Brașov, on May 1, it was -3.7 ºC, breaking a record that dates back to May 1915. 111 years ago, it was -3.3 ºC at the Brașov weather station. It was also very cold in Făgăraş (-3.6 ºC). A new record was also set in Sinaia (elevation 1500), -7 degrees Celsius, also on May 1.

The lowest temperature (apart from mountain weather stations) was -8.1 ºC at Miercurea Ciuc, on May 1, 2026, breaking a record from May 2007.

Absolute cold records were also in Crișana (Holod and Borod), in Banat (Jimbolia), but especially in Transylvania (Făgăraş, Târgu Secuiesc, Fundata, Boita).

It was the coldest day on May 1, because 56 of the 170 weather stations recorded the lowest temperature for the first day of the month of Florar.

The lowest temperature during these days was at the Omu peak: -13.1 C, three degrees Celsius from the absolute minimum recorded there in May of 1940 (-16 degrees Celsius). There were extremely low temperatures in the last two days also in the plains: on May 3, 2026 there was frost in the south, in Oltenita, and on May 4 they were below 0 degrees Celsius in Ploiești.

The month of May has not started with such cold days since 2007 when there were absolute minimums at 37 weather stations on the 2nd and 3rd of May.
