The controversial Michael Jackson biopic marks a feat that has only been achieved once before

Lionsgate's controversial “Michael,” criticized for pausing on the 1988 Bad tour and avoiding the child sex abuse allegations the King of Pop faced, has had a spectacular debut, writes Screen Rant.

The film, which stars the singer's grandson Jaafar Jackson, marked the best start ever at the US box office for a musical biopic.

With $97.2 million in its opening weekend, the film clearly surpassed the previous record held by Straight Outta Compton ($60.2 million).

With the recent announcement made by the studio Lionsgate, “Michael” scored another performance.

The film crossed the $300 million mark globally in just 10 days of its release.

Thus, it surpassed the performance of the movie “Elvis” (288.6 million) and becomes the second musical biopic in history to pass this threshold, after “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

However, the film about the band Queen remains a phenomenon that is hard to match. Although it had a more modest debut ($51.1 million), it ended up grossing $911 million worldwide.

Whether “Michael” can match that feat remains to be seen.

Although public interest remains high, the film may not match the unusual stability of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has consistently maintained its weekly attendance.

Despite the fact that the critics were harsh, moviegoers remained more excited about “Michael” and want to see the biography of the King of Pop on the big screen.

Even if it won't break the all-time record set by “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the Lionsgate-produced film has every chance of remaining one of the highest-grossing musical biopics in history.
